Railcar50 - a celebration of 50 years of British Railways' First Generation DMUs.

DMU Preservation

Unfortunately DMUs have often been disregarded by enthusiasts in favour of the "more glamorous" locomotives or coaching stock. In truth, DMUs offer a bit of both, and those that get involved don't regret it.

DMU preservation requires a complete range of skills: mechanical, electrical, carpentry, painting, welding etc. No matter what skills you have they can be made use of, no matter what level they are. And you will be surprised at what you will learn as well!

In most parts of the country there will be DMUs on a line near you. Check the alphabetical listings at www.railcar.co.uk/preserved/preserved.htm. Most groups will welcome new volunteers. Also see www.railcar.co.uk/societies.htm, which lists some of the more formal groups, and there are a few page detailing some of the preservation activities that were involved in restoring a bubble car.
